Anthropic IPO Filing Reignites AI Trading Frenzy; Asia Tech Rallies, Crude Oil Falls Amid a Wave of Risk Events

Buoyed by news of Anthropic filing for its long-awaited IPO, the rally in Wall Street technology stocks spread across Asia, reviving enthusiasm for artificial intelligence trading, while crude oil extended its decline.

South Korea’s KOSPI Index, a bellwether for the AI sector, climbed more than 4% as chip giants SK Hynix and Samsung Electronics advanced. Japanese semiconductor shares also rebounded, pushing the MSCI Asia Pacific Index up 0.8%.

Wall Street’s focus has fallen on massive financing plans among tech firms. Meta Platforms Inc. is seeking to raise up to $95 billion. Broadcom has arranged a $63 billion chip purchase deal, while SpaceX signed equipment finance leases worth roughly $40 billion.

Elsewhere, Brent crude, the global oil benchmark, fell 0.7% to around $115 a barrel. Senior officials from multiple countries traveled to Tehran previously to revive talks aimed at preventing further escalation of tensions in the Middle East. U.S. Treasury prices were largely steady, and the Bloomberg Dollar Spot Index held onto gains from the prior two trading sessions. Bitcoin edged higher, trading just above $80,000.

After a sharp selloff in chip stocks recently driven by stretched valuations and heavy spending, Anthropic’s IPO will serve as a critical test of investor appetite for AI companies. Traders are also closely watching the Federal Reserve’s rate decision on Wednesday and earnings from major tech firms this week, which will offer fresh clues about the outlook for artificial intelligence.

Anthropic submitted its highly anticipated S-1 filing, moving one step closer to becoming the first public company focused on building advanced AI models. Following weeks of market skepticism, investors are combing through the document for signs of real demand across the AI market.

Optimism returned after a turbulent week for tech stocks. The Nasdaq 100 dropped 2.9% last Thursday, triggered after Meta Platforms Inc. lifted its capital expenditure forecast above operating cash flow, leaving investors searching for proof that massive AI spending will pay off.

That question will be put to the test again this week as heavy AI spenders release earnings. Alphabet and Microsoft report results on Wednesday, followed by Amazon and Intel on Thursday. Investors will scrutinize their spending roadmaps and whether these investments can generate sufficient returns.

In other developments, Brazilian equities slumped after President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva secured re-election, stoking fears of worsening fiscal strain in Latin America’s largest economy.

Philip Brown, Head of Research at FIIG Securities, wrote that the coming two weeks packed with elections may also fuel market volatility.

The Fed faces another major test. Markets broadly expect policymakers to hold rates steady after a September hike. Pricing currently points to roughly a 10% chance of a rate rise on Wednesday, while odds for another hike before year-end top 70%.
